In Character Information
Name: Daichi Shijima
Series: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
Canon Standing: Post New World Ending (Anguised One Route)
Age: 18
Birthday & Astrology Sign: August 15; Leo
Arcana: Chariot

Personality:
On the surface, Daichi is a friendly, cheerful and energetic guy; your typical comic relief best friend sidekick character. He likes to talk to people and be social, and jokes around a lot, even if he's just barely met you. He has a bad habit of making light of heavy situations, but this is as much a coping mechanism as it is his normal personality trying to make up for his lack of any idea how to react to the situation at hand. He tries to lighten the mood while being very well aware of the situation, though that latter part doesn't usually show through and he's been accused of being an idiot on more than one occasion. And he would agree with this assertion, playing up the comic relief quality of his own bad luck and personality in order to get a laugh out of people. He's pretty excitable and has a tendency to be humorously overdramatic, but is also startled easily because of how high-strung he is. Usually his silly dramatics stay out of serious moments, but on occasion they'll leak in to the serious business so that he can get himself pumped. And while he's not naive, he's pretty trusting of even people that he's just met.

In actuality though, Daichi is a very heavy thinker. If he's not talking to someone or distracted by something else, he can often be found pondering things like morals and society with a surprising amount of depth-- though this habit is more detrimental than helpful, in his case. When he has time to think, Daichi tends to over think, and ends up worrying himself silly, even about things that aren't that important. He's a big worrier, always concerned about his friends' safety, as well as his own (and the world's, if he can remember it past all the rest of the worrying), and will often worry over nothing too. His overthinking lends him to a naturally pessimistic outlook, and his views become rather grim when he's worried. He's very well aware of this bad habit of his however, and whenever he becomes too pessimistic, he'll try and laugh it off and deny the dark possibilities, trying to force himself to think positive even when he actually thinks things are going very badly. His overthinking also leads to him getting nervous and awkward very easily, especially in social situations despite his usual cheerful friendliness. When he gets nervous, he tends to ramble on and on, and this often results in him sticking his foot in his mouth. Though he is pretty much a complete idiot in this aspect, he has the best intentions at heart (though it's hard for him to communicate that without stumbling all over himself verbally), and really is just trying to be nice.

He's a genuinely nice guy with good priorities (worrying more about the fact that the girl he likes is in danger than the fact that she might like his best friend), though that's often marred by his pessimism and foot-in-mouth tendencies, and unconditionally wants to help people that are in trouble. Unfortunately, he's also very well aware that there's not really much he can do to help people in a lot of situations, especially during the Septentrione Invasion-- he is, by all his standards, an average high school student that's next big concern is college, not some kind of hero or warrior of justice. He doesn't like violence, has a few non-confrontational tendencies, and is honestly terrified of having to fight the demons that invade Japan. If there's any way for him to get out of a battle without fighting, he'll try and take it, but he's not smart enough to be able to wiggle his way out of things like that, and usually ends up fighting anyways. His reluctance for confrontation gives the impression of him being timid, and (let's face it) a bit pathetic. He would be a pacifist if he could, but he's practical-minded enough that he knows that pacifism often isn't an option, and while he's not cowardly, he's not willing to let people get hurt just so he can avoid confrontation. If someone's in trouble and he's able to help, he will jump to action immediately, even if means having to fight. He's scared of fighting, doesn't like it, and doesn't like getting hurt, but he'd rather do all of the above than have someone else get hurt because he was being a wimp-- especially if it's someone he's close to. He's protective of his friends, and very empathic because of it, getting angry at people for making his friends upset, as well as being loyal to a fault; though he has his hiccups and moments of doubt (hey, he's only human), in the end he's more likely to stick to those he's befriended until the very end.

As one might guess, his overthinking, worrying and mental status as incredibly "average" lead to him having not the best self-esteem-- which is to say it's not very good at all. He's not self-deprecating, but he is reasonably humble, and has a genuine admiration for the protagonist, Io, and the people he worked with during the Septentrione Invasion, firmly believing they are more competent and strong than he is and praising them for their hard work. He's not the jealous type at all, thanks to his low self-confidence, though you wouldn't be able to tell how low it is from a first glance. He plays up the idiot aspect of his personality because he himself believes it-- and indeed, when people around him get into the really complicated stuff, he has no idea what they're saying (particularly with physics and philosophy). His lack of confidence makes him less effective than he could be, since he tends to downplay his own skills and accidentally hold himself back, but what he is confident in, he will be sure you know-- when he takes pride in something, he is all about announcing it loud and clear.

But he's actually much more competent and intelligent than he lets on; he makes an effort to understand what he doesn't, it just takes time. He's academically proficient despite being relatively book dumb, as he's in the top class of his senior grade, and he's actually a very good strategist. When he was forced to fight his friends, he came up with an almost pincer-esque strategy to try and surround and defeat them, and when he fights, he employs crippling skills (Inflicting status effects, using ice to slow someone down) in order to reconcile his reluctance to fight. While he frets and worries all over the place, when he's under pressure and there's no time to think is when he suddenly becomes much more competent. It takes him no time at all to figure out a plan to cripple Dubhe, and this also accounts for his good grades, as for the most part he's an excellent test-taker despite his worrying. So while he's handy in a punch, once the heat is off, he goes right back to bumbling and awkward.

Ironically enough, in spite of his outwards comic relief, he's actually the responsible one, at least between Kaito and him-- which is half due to his worrying, but if he has obligations he will fulfill them, and he'll make sure people obey the rules that make sense. In light of Polaris and all the JP's nonsense, he's got a bit of an independent streak going against authority figures, and firmly believes in human potential (even if he doesn't entirely understand everything about it).

Backstory:
Daichi | Devil Survivor 2
Before the events of the Septentrione Invasion, Daichi was an all around average high school student. He lived in Tokyo, near the railway tracks as an only child, with two normal parents, a working father and a stay-at-home mother, and they were pretty financially secure. He's known Kaito (the protagonist) practically since he was born, and the two families grew up in the same neighborhood together. Though his parents were supportive, they didn't expect much of him when he grew up. Despite not being the smartest kid in class, he got good grades in school and was a student in the highest senior class before the disaster. He's had a crush on Io for a while, had a handful of other friends that died in the invasion, and received his driver's license before the demons attacked. Beyond that every other aspect in his life is completely normal, as he hasn't even figured out what he's going to study in college.

Canon Powers:
Along with the rest of the party members, Daichi has a small amount of spiritual energy that allows him to see certain things (one of which was the Nicaea website and death clips). This, combined with the power from the Summoning App on his phone, allows him to use a few magical attacks on his own:

Multi-Hit (Inflicts a small amount of Physical damage to one enemy 2-7 times. Number of hits depends on how much more Agility the user has than the target.) (Physical)
Bufudyne (Inflicts a large amount of Ice damage on one enemy.) (Ice)
Nigamoyogi (Moderate chance of inflicting Poison ailment to all enemies.) (Mind)

Because of his experience in the lock down, he's physically stronger than most teenagers his age and size (contributing to the damage he can put out with his physical attacks), and is more or less versed in hand to hand combat by this point, but he's also returned to a pretty comfortably state of clumsiness. He's also surprisingly agile, and would rather exploit that and try to run away than actually fight someone.

also he can drive.

Canon Weapons|Items:
The only weapons he uses are his fists (Physical) and his cellphone, in order to summon demons.

Canon Allies:
Daichi is a Demon tamer, and currently has access to two demons on his team, which he can summon through the Summoning App on his phone.

1st Person | Action Example
Hey--! Anyone there?

[Well, he wasn't as good at computers as Kaito or Fumi, but he wasn't THAT bad at technology. But these new...phone...? things... were, kind of weird. He wished his cellphone still had normal service, honestly.]

Uh, if anyone's listening, my name's Daichi Shijima. Does anyone know mechanics or something?

[He flipped the view of the camera around to show a for the most part average truck, though it was completely beaten up; the front looked like it rammed right into an explosion, one side was completely scraped up and trashed, and parts all over it were starting to fall off (and some already had).]

I uh... It was parked outside my apartment, and I have the keys, but I don't have any clue how to fix it. B-But if anyone knows how to, I'll figure out a way to pay you! I can even drive you around somewhere if you need a ride!

3rd Person | Prose Example
OK, he had to admit, he was worried. Suddenly taken out of his world to come to this other weird place to settle a bet for the sake of humanity?

"And after all that hard work..." Daichi mumbled to himself as he leaned against the wall of the Metro, his neck angled to look out the window as he watched the city of Hinoto-Ri pass by. "Augh... we can't help Saiduq if we're trapped in this world...! And what about all this Persona stuff...?" What was going to happen to the their own world...?

Admittedly his under the breath mumbling got him some weird glances from other passengers, but he was perfectly content with just ignoring them and continuing with his...rather distressing train of thought. As far as he could tell, Personas worked like Demons, only they were inside your head. The thought alone was enough to make his face grimace, and he idly wondered if that's what Io felt like having Lugh's essence. Was Lugh talking to her the last few days of the week? Because Agni sure liked to bother him. Like right now, when he was busy thinking, and Agni was telling him to chill. Which was actually doing a lot more to make him not chill.

"Augh... why me?" He hunched forward and brought a hand up to carefully hold the side of his forehead. Lived through a veritable apocalypse and fought an evil star administrator, and he still felt like an ordinary guy. So why did he keep getting caught up in this stuff?!

Eventually he just ended up in a mental half-argument with Agni, and absent-mindedly wandered off the Metro at some stop that he picked at random. The stop turned out to be somewhere in the Sagittarius district. You know, that place with all the muggings and mechanical work hazards. The last time he had ended up here he just barely avoided getting hit with a metal beam.

Oh boy, just his luck.
